HISTORY OF THE SASKATOON AQUARIUM SOCIETY

2005, marks the 35th anniversary of the Saskatoon Aquarium society. It began as a group of eleven people who decided to form a club dedicated to the aquarium hobby.

The first meeting was in February 1970, and was held in a private home. Soon a more formal meeting time and place was established. The Bessborough Hotel was chosen, with meetings to be held on the last Sunday of the month at 1:30 p.m. By autumn a constitution had been proposed and accepted, the Nekton (our quarterly publication) and Breeder's Award Program were started and a club library was established.

In early 1973, the club had to find a new meeting place. After a short term stint at the downtown library, the club moved into St. Thomas Moore College and stayed there for the next 16 years. Our Home Show started in 1977, the first year we did not have a public show. We now have our Public Show every two years and our Home Show every year.

In March 1989 the club again moved the meeting site to its current location at St. Timothy's Church Hall. It still meets the last Sunday of the month at 1:30 p.m. The club is very active and usually at least 80 people attend the meetings. Along with the very successful auction, there is usually a speaker presenting on an aquarium hobby topic.

The club continues to have many experts in the various types of fish and plants available in the hobby. It also continues to bring in guest speakers from all across North America.
